Terms & Conditions

IMPORTANT ACOUSTIC & HARDWARE DISCLAIMER

Free Sound Meter is provided exclusively for educational, informational, and general recreational reference. Readings obtained through web browsers on consumer laptops, desktop computers, and smartphones cannot replace certified acoustic measurement devices.

Consumer microphones exhibit hardware variations, manufacturer-specific Automatic Gain Control (AGC), noise-cancellation DSP algorithms, and frequency roll-offs. This web utility is NOT certified under IEC 61672-1 (Class 1 or Class 2) or ANSI S1.4 standards. It MUST NOT be used for occupational safety compliance (OSHA/NIOSH citations), legal noise disputes, courtroom evidence, or diagnostic hearing evaluations.

1. Acceptance of Terms

By accessing or using Free Sound Meter (freesoundmeter.com), including our online sound meter and decibel meter tools, you agree to be bound by these Terms & Conditions, all applicable laws, and our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree with any of these terms, you are prohibited from using or accessing this site.

2. Informational & Educational Use Only

All content, decibel meters, acoustic visualizers, and noise exposure charts available on freesoundmeter.com are offered solely for general informational and educational guidance.

  • Classroom Management: Teachers and educators may use the live visual gauge to help students monitor classroom sound levels.
  • Personal Audio Check: Users can observe comparative noise spikes and estimate ambient sound in home offices, workshops, and recreational spaces.
  • Professional Acoustic Testing: When official compliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), or municipal noise ordinances is required, you must employ a calibrated, certified Type 1 or Type 2 sound level meter operated by a qualified acoustic engineer.

3. Microphone Access & Technical Limitations

The software utilizes standard HTML5 and Web Audio API specifications to interface with your system's default audio input device. You acknowledge that:

  • Audio measurement accuracy depends entirely on the physical characteristics of your microphone hardware and internal sound card.
  • Operating system-level enhancements (such as noise suppression, echo cancellation, or voice isolation) may alter dynamic decibel readings unless disabled in your device settings.
  • Our manual calibration slider provides software-level relative offsetting but does not perform physical acoustic pressure chamber calibration.

4. Permitted and Prohibited Conduct

You are granted a limited, revocable, non-exclusive license to access and interact with Free Sound Meter for personal, educational, or internal organizational purposes. You agree not to:

  • Reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble proprietary scripts or build artifacts of the website.
  • Subject our web infrastructure to automated stress testing, scraping, or Denial of Service (DoS) attacks.
  • Misrepresent decibel readings generated by this tool as legally binding or certified acoustic certifications in official proceedings.

5. Intellectual Property

The design system, brand identity, layout, logos, visualizers, SVG assets, and original written copy on freesoundmeter.com are the intellectual property of Free Sound Meter and are protected by applicable copyright and trademark laws. You may not duplicate or redistribute website assets without prior written consent.

6. Disclaimer of Warranties

The website and its acoustic tools are provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis without warranties of any kind, either express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular acoustic purpose, or non-infringement. We do not warrant that the service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or free from hardware-dependent inaccuracies.

7. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Free Sound Meter, its developers, operators, and affiliates shall not be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, consequential, special, or exemplary damages arising out of or in connection with the use or inability to use this website. This includes, without limitation, damages for hearing loss, personal injury, regulatory penalties, business interruption, or legal disputes resulting from reliance on web-based sound level measurements.

8. Modifications to Terms

We reserve the right to revise or update these Terms & Conditions at any time without prior notice. By continuing to use freesoundmeter.com after revisions take effect, you agree to be bound by the updated terms. We encourage visitors to review this page periodically.
